Music That Moves With Us…

When the earth shifts beneath us, music and memory are the sole things that can be carried onward in plenitude.

As the great granddaughter of 19th Century Irish emigrants of famine and political oppression, Nancy grew up in Douro, Ontario in the multi-generational general store of her family – just a walk away from where her ancestors initially made their new homes over a century and a half earlier. Raised on the oral history of their trans-Atlantic migration, she was also nurtured by a musical heritage passed on through the generations that married traditional Irish ballads with Canadiana and folk tethered to the logging camps north of Peterborough.

Since then, Nancy lived another lifetime seeking story and song abroad while making a living, before returning to the kitchen parties and community halls of Peterborough County a decade ago. The result is a treasured collection of folk music and lore, bridging continents and cultures from Ireland to her homeland, Europe to the Americas and back again; melodies in English, Spanish, Catalan and French. Along with vocal interpretations of local ballads and harmonies blended in real time with the voice of her grandmother, recorded in the 1950s by folklorist Edith Fowke.

All things connected, Nancy opens a singular Trans-Atlantic songbook for her listeners that awakens the richness of life when we have a deep sense of place and pays homage to the generational shift and sacrifice that migration, travel in its most ancient form, demands.
